Hello? The Sun is shining!

Well I know I haven't been paying very much attention to my little chunk of space but honestly it is because I suck...lol.  Actually I have been trying to get out and enjoy the nice weather we have been having and when it is crap I have been trying to get down to the work out dungeon to shed this confirmed 3.6 lb weight gain I have had since quitting smoking.  Hublet and I are now over the 2 month quit mark.  You would think it would be getting a little easier to control the oral cravings.  I think it is actually if we didn't keep so much crap around here...ie. licorice, hard candies, chips, blah, blah, blah...typically anything that people who have quit smoking should not have in the house...lol.

On a brighter note, we had a marvelous visit with John and Kari when they ventured up to the great white north.  We had marvelous weather that weekend so we were able to get out for a nice walk with Bootsie Girl.  I had a fabulous time but I was left with a feeling that perhaps a week long visit would have been more suitable...lol.  It went by in a whirlwind and there were still so many things to do and see and talk about.  Hopefully they will be able to make it up this way again someday.  Summer in my city offers loads of excellent waterfront entertainment so it was too bad that they could not have made it up again before shipping off to the "Bluenose Province" for good.  It would also have been nice for them to see Bootsie again with a much sunnier disposition.  Holy Crankpot!  She really is sweet most of the time guys...lol.  Finally it was also nice to see Jiggly Pants again after a year long passage of time.  Life gets in the way is all I can say.  It is still like slipping into a comfy pair of jeans though when we get together.  I got to spend some time with her boys as well which was nice.  They actually still love me even when I don't see them very often...lol  That is probably the reason why now that I come to think of it...lol.  Wouldn't want a Auntie Moe overdose!  I didn't get to see "James" as he likes to be called now as he was out being a 20 year old with the chick.  What 20 year old boy cares whether he sees his Godmother or not...lol.  I know I would have likely groaned about it at his age and found a way out of the visit...lol.  I also did mange to shock Jiggly which I do love to do at least once per visit.  It had to do with the Omelet Making Guy, remember Stink?

Well I leave you with at least a small token of helpful weight loss information.  Here it is  to find out how many calories you burn doing regular exercise or even just every day houseshold chores.

Cheers to all and a big welcome and good luck to Heidi who has generously agreed to take over the WLS space.

Look before you eat!

Oh woe is me!  Alas this is a short and not so sweet entry.  I decided to indulge in some of those delicious Tim Horton's cookies yesterday as a Supplier brought some in.  My WW mind said you should really check before you stuff your gob but my little kid mind said "How bad could it really be?"  I looked last night and it was very, very, VERY BAD!  Guilt overcame me so I headed downstairs and got aboard the stationary bike and rode vigourously for about 35 minutes.  I renamed myself Sweaty Betty after the ride....lol.  I will usually ride for about 8 songs on mp3 player and the final song that randomly decided to play was Size of a Cow by The Wonderstuff.  I zapped that baby in a flash.  I already felt bad enough...lol.

I gained 2 to 3 lbs over Christmas which I have been working on losing but have had little luck until this morning when I climbed upon the demon scale.  After blowing my allowable points right out the window yesterday I was down to only needing to lose one more pound to get back to my pre-Christmas weight.  Who would have thought that would have ever happened?  I was expecting to be suffering from Pigitis this morning...lol.  Well that is a quick one for ya.  My baby girl turns 2 today.  I haven't a clue where the time went.  SHe isn't even a baby anymore.  She is a little people now.  It walks and talks and sasses me.  I am sure I can expect more in the future.

Happy New Year to all my friends.  Welcome back to Kim, Ang and Chris.  I have missed you guys!

cheers,

Drinking Water

Sometimes one of the hardest parts of dieting is drinking all of your required water.  My girlfriend Jiggly Pants, Kathy or Stinky as I call her, left a comment about trying to drink more water.  I have managed to work my water intake up to an acceptable rate.  I like drinking water out of bottles.  It kind of feels like a treat.

240 ml = 8 oz = 1 cup = 1 glass

One 500 ml bottle of water = just over 16 oz.  How easy is it to drink one of those bottles I ask?  Easy peasy!  Drink three of them and you have your required six 8 oz glasses of water.  I just refill my bottle 3 or 4 times a day.  Luckily I have one of those water purifiers on my sink and we also have one at work so I don't have to drink yucky tap water.  If you have tap water you can make it taste better by putting it through a Brita jug or you can buy a case of the bottled water.  Most places have it on sale for reasonable prices.

People look at the daily required water and think I will never be able to drink all that.  If you think of it as drinking 3 to 4 bottles of water it really doesn't seem like very much does it?  Just mind over matter.

Next part of this is for Jiggly.  If you are really serious about getting in touch with your healthier self, start another space to record things and join up to the weight support group I have joined.  Everyone is awesome and so supportive.  There is a link at the top of the page.  Your participation can be as little or as much as you want.  There is no pressure.  Lots of good information is available and lots of good ideas for a healthier lifestyle.  Losing weight should be a fun.

Cheers!

Nutritional Information

I was chatting online with "E" the other night and she mentioned something about how she went out to eat and the restaurant didn't have any nutritional information available for her to make an educated and healthy chose for her meal.  I ran into the same problem before so now what I do is go to the restaurant's online site if they have one and get all the info I need before I go out.  Not all places have web sites though so this also presents a problem.  In cases like that I will always ask for something that has breast of chicken in it and ask them to hold the sauce.  I get them to substitute veggies or a salad if anything else on the plate is not weight watchers friendly.  I also ask them how much their breast of chicken weighs.  I used to be a little embarassed about asking but now I just tell them I am on weight watchers and need the information.  I have never run into a problem and most places are very helpful once you tell them that.  People really do care about someone else trying to be a healthier person.  You have to remember that they want you to come back so they are usually very eager to help make your visit a pleasant one.

The nutritional information is how we calculate our points so it is very important that you have that available for everything.  This includes grocery shopping.  In Canada, I think it is mandatory to have the information on the packaging but I have come across some things in Walmart that don't have any.  My rule of thumb is that if it doesn't have it, it doesn't go in my cart.  You need to limit your ability to sabotage your diet and this is one way I address it.  The other way is to measure everything that you can.  Did you ever notice that 1 tsp of margarine starts to look more like a tbsp when you are guessing...lol.  I know that they teach you how to eyeball but I only use that when I have no choice.  I have two scales at home in case one breaks...lol

Well I think that about does it for me.

Great losing to you all!

Labeling

Hi all,

I just wanted to share a valuable weight watchers tip.  It is good practice after you go shopping to take a black magic marker and mark on everything that you plan to eat with food point values.  It makes it easier to throw together a meal when you have the points there right in front of you.  I buy those Michelina's frozen dinners.  Before they go in the freezer grab your calculator if you  have one or use the online calculator and figure out the points.  I think this is also helpful when you are in a hurry and don't feel like calculating out the points you are going to eat.  It helps you to make a healthier choice.  You can mark everything...your cereal box, rice box, etc.  It is also helpful to mark the associated portion size pertaining to those points.

Great losing!

10 Tips to Walk Off the Weight

Looking for a way to step up your weight loss efforts? In addition to calories, try counting daily strides. It seems that logging 10,000 or more steps a day may keep love handles at bay.

Scores of studies are now showing that pinning a pedometre to your pants may minimize your girth. In fact, recent research appearing in the May 2004 Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise showed a significant relationship between pedometre-tracked steps per day and the body composition of middle-aged women. The women who consistently clocked 10,000 or more steps per day had lower percentages of body fat, body mass indices (BMI) and waist-to-hip circumferences.

Some more compelling evidence for upping your step count comes from a recent study of the Amish. These farmers, who live much as their ancestors did 150 years ago, eat a diet that is quite high in fat and sugar, but have an obesity rate of only 4 percent, as compared to 31 percent of the general United States population. The difference? A much higher physical activity level. When tracked on pedometres, the Amish logged an average of 14,000-18,000 steps per day (with some sporting numbers as high as 51,000). In comparison, the average office worker takes only about 2,000-3,000 steps per day.

The simple act of wearing a pedometre has also been scientifically proven to increase the wearers' awareness of their daily activity and correspondingly escalate exercise levels, a fact that is of great significance considering how our population gets an inadequate amount of exercise.

With even the President's Council of Physical Fitness and Sports supporting step tracking, it seems that pedometres are becoming the new "hip" accessory. Interested in joining the "in" crowd while weight whittling? Here are some tips:

    Starting Step Tracking

    • Acquire a pedometre. Decent versions are available for $20-$30 at most sporting goods stores. Or pick one up at your next Weight Watchers meeting.
    • Check for accuracy. To quickly assess if your gadget is over- or underestimating strides, walk a set distance several times while verbally counting your steps. Compare the number you speak to the number on your pedometre to get an estimate of how closely calibrated they are and adjust your daily numerical goals accordingly.
    • Determine your average. 10,000 steps a day may be too lofty a goal for some people right out of the gate (that's about 8 km). A good starting point is to count your steps for three days and take an average. Then shoot to add 2,000 additional steps per day to your baseline number. Eventually challenge yourself to go higher.
    • Join the Club. If you're looking for motivation, find other pedometre users on the WeightWatchers.ca message boards, and compare notes.
    • Don't leave home without it. The more aware you are of your numbers, the more likely you are to keep active throughout the day.

    Everything Counts
Check out these step equivalents (you can boost your daily count by being more active in other areas as well).

    • 1.5 km = 2,000 average steps
    • 1 block = 200 average steps
    • 10 minutes of walking = 1,200 steps on average
    • Bicycling or swimming = 150 steps per minute
    • Weight lifting = 100 steps per minute
    • Rollerskating = 200 steps per minute

    Sneaky Steps
Get creative when it comes to adding clicks to your counter.

    • Marching minutes. Every 30 minutes, get up from your desk, easy chair, or wherever and walk in place for 1-5 minutes.
    • Axe the "drive through." Park your car and get out to walk into the bank, pharmacy or fast food joint.
    • Reconnect in person. Instead of sending off an e-mail, walk to your coworker's office or neighbour's house and talk to them live!
    • Hide the remote. That way you'll have to get up to change the channel. Make a practice of walking around the house during commercial breaks.
    • Pace! Don't stand still while watching the spin cycle, waiting for the bus, or talking in a meeting. If anyone asks, just say you think better on your feet!

Even a short walk can make a big difference in both your fitness and your weight loss efforts.

    Water For Weight Loss

I came across this article on one of my adventures through internet land and felt that it was important, particularly for me this week as I try to increase my water intake.

We all know the drill when it comes to drinking plenty of water, but are you really aware of the benefits and how much you should be drinking?

    The Importance of Water
Water is essential for a healthy body. It is present in every cell and tissue and is vital to many biological functions - digestion, absorption, circulation and excretion. Yet it's easy to forget how much water you need. It takes around 1½ litres a day to sustain normal hydration levels. That equates to eight large glasses.

    Some H20 facts...

    • It's vital to life and could help you lose weight
    • The human body is 75% water and needs to be hydrated to be in top working order
    • It's the best product for a clear, glowing complexion
    • Water keeps you 'regular' - and helps avoid urinary tract infections
    • A water filter is a cheap alternative to buying bottled water

    Where to Get Your Water
Drinking plain filtered water can be a good source for getting your quota. A water filter that gets rid of any potential additives in tap water can be a worthy investment - as this will do all the work as opposed to your kidneys having to.

In addition, you should also look to increase the amount of fresh fruit and vegetables you eat as some contain between 60-90% water. You'll find a high water content in sprouted seeds and legumes, and cooked grains including oatmeal, rice and barley and cooked legumes such as lentils, red kidney beans and chickpeas. Most Core? foods contain water which bulks out the food and dilutes the calories.

So what if you drink smoothies, tea and coffee? Do they count towards your quota?
While plain water is the best option, if you prefer to add some flavour, then opt for sugar-free smoothies. If you're already in the habit of checking the nutritional panels on your food items, extend this to your drinks. If you see the words 'no added sugar' it actually means there is sugar added, just that the added amount is less than the legal limit needed to put sugar on the ingredients list.

While tea and coffee both contain water, they are diuretics, causing the body to lose water through urination. These do not count towards your water intake.

    Action Plan

    • Start the day with a glass of hot water and lemon juice
    • Increase the amount of water-based foods you eat (fruit and veg)
    • Always have a large glass of water on your desk at work or at home. Or if you're out and about buy a bottle of mineral water and keep it topped up so you're never without a supply.

    Diet Tips

Sometimes it only takes a few small changes to get you started in the right direction.  Here are a couple of useful tips.

    • Substitute a small spoon for the bigger one. That way you can enjoy the cereal, soup, whatever for a longer period of time. And keep a one-cup bowl handy so that you don't have to measure all the time.

    • Frozen dinners are a quick and easy way to watch your calorie intake and portion size — especially if you're working late and might otherwise order take-out!  I always take extra frozen vegetables  to boost my veggie intake as well as make me feel fuller.  Let's face it, those frozen dinners really don't feel like a real meal when you eat them on their own.

    Diet Tips

    • Rather than pouring dressing all over your salad, dip your fork into the dressing (which you order on the side) before spearing the lettuce. You'll be using 1/3 the dressing and  still getting a satisfying taste.
